Our role as teachers is not limited to only providing students with information, society views us as caregivers to their children away from home. We are charged with the responsibility of providing guidance to our students as well as moulding their young minds. I have a passion for providing information to individuals so that they can be successful in all facets of life, this has influenced me to pursue a career in teaching.
As a teacher I take great pleasure in knowing that I have contributed to the overall development of my students where I assist in the development of their critical thinking skills which would allow them to utilize their academic knowledge to solve problems in society. My objective in teaching English to my students is to stimulate their understanding of the contents of the discipline, through fun and creative classroom activities such as, quizzes, demonstrations through plays and the viewing of films. These activities would also help to hone their analytical and researching skills.
Lastly, in order to motivate my students I first need to motivate myself to teach them. Our moods in the classroom are very contagious, therefore, I have to ensure that I display the type of positive attitude that I want my students to have towards the lesson. Additionally, I would teach my lessons in a way that my students can relate to them. I also try to be impartial in my evaluation, grading and response to my students. I try to practice fairness is the classroom as teachers it is imperative to understand that any sign of favouritism shown towards a student may result in a hostile learning environment. Therefore, we need to be mindful of our behaviour towards our students so as to avoid giving the impression of partiality.
